ATCF Ch 105 Part 1 – It Was Tong Yi Who Gave Them the Push (I)

“The teachers in high school used to say university life would be easy—no early morning or late evening self-study sessions, no one cares if you skip class, and we are free to roam around on weekends. But the reality is nothing like that. The most baffling thing is that the student union even does dorm inspections on weekend evenings. Even though we are no longer high schoolers!” Wen Wan complained quietly after dinner as she and Jiang Li prepared to attend evening self-study together.

Jiang Li half-heartedly consoled her, “Maybe things will ease up a bit in the second year.”

Wen Wan shook her head. “I don’t think so. Anyway, I’ve come to terms with the harshness of the real world. Even after we graduate and start working, we’ll probably still be this busy.”

Jiang Li laughed at her remarks, “You have a pretty clear perspective on life.”

Wen Wan grinned smugly. “After being tricked so many times, I’m bound to get sharper. Like Lin Zhao this time! I’ve decided to ignore him for three days. Hmph!” Just as she finished speaking, her phone vibrated briefly in her pocket. She took it out and saw a message from Lin Zhao. With another huff, she said, “Even if he texts me, I won’t forgive him so quickly… Eh?”

Her face suddenly showed a look of surprise.

“What did he say to you?” Jiang Li asked, curious. If it were just a typical apology message, Wen Wan wouldn’t look this surprised.

Wen Wan hesitated for a few seconds, “I think you might get… angry when you read this message.”

Jiang Li’s curiosity deepened. “Why would I get angry?”

Wen Wan took a deep breath. “Fine, I’ll show you. After all, you’re my closest friend. There’s no way I’d hide anything from you.”

So, she handed her phone to Jiang Li, whose expression turned incredulous after reading the message.

Tong Yi didn’t want her to worry, so he told Lin Zhao not to say anything to Wen Wan? What kind of logic was that?

In order to trap the kidney-robbing trio, it was clearly Lin Zhao who took the real risk. All Tong Yi did was send people to monitor and wait for the right moment to report them to the police.

The one who put himself in danger was Lin Zhao and the ones making the arrests were the police—Tong Yi didn’t even show up. What danger could he possibly face?

Seeing Jiang Li’s reaction, Wen Wan cautiously added, “I think Tong Yi probably meant well. Maybe… don’t get too mad at him?”

When Jiang Li remained silent, Wen Wan continued, “Or, if you’re going to be mad, just don’t stay mad for too long. Teach him a lesson, but keep it brief?”

Jiang Li finally spoke up. “Are you still mad at Lin Zhao?”

After some thought, Wen Wan shook her head. “I was more worried than angry, to be honest. Now that I know it was Tong Yi who told him not to say anything, I’m not mad anymore. Besides, I think Lin Zhao must have been scared today, so I’m planning to buy him something nice to eat and visit him tomorrow.”

Jiang Li: “…”

She had come to realize that Wen Wan was genuinely easy to appease. Just moments ago, she had been fuming, vowing not to speak to Lin Zhao for three days. Now, because of a single message, she was ready to run to his side.

But maybe that was a good thing—simple-minded people often found it easier to be happy. What’s more, Wen Wan wasn’t always this naïve. In many situations, she had a very clear mindset of things.

As Jiang Li was lost in these thoughts, her phone vibrated. She took it out from her pocket to see that Tong Yi was calling. After the call was connected, she immediately heard the guy’s casual, nonchalant tone. “Jiang Xiao Li, did you catch the news today?”

Jiang Li knew exactly what he was referring to but deliberately responded off-topic. “Yeah, the U.S. is preparing to start another war. I wish the world remains peaceful.”

“…” After a few seconds, Tong Yi asked, “That’s not what I meant. Didn’t you see any other news?”

Jiang Li feigned confusion. “I read plenty of news. Which one are you talking about?”

Tong Yi then realized that she hadn’t seen the news about the trio being arrested, which explained her calm demeanor. He clarified, “I was talking about the news of that scumbag Jiang Zhou and his accomplices being arrested. It’s really all thanks to Lin Zhao. If he hadn’t risked his life and become a bait, those three wouldn’t have been caught so easily.”

“Oh, that’s what you meant. I did see it,” Jiang Li replied in an unusually calm tone.

“Well… don’t you have something to say about it?” Tong Yi’s tone started to falter, knowing that an impending storm was coming. Lin Zhao was right—since Jiang Xiao Li and Wen Wan were so close, something that made Wen Wan angry would likely anger Jiang Xiao Li too!

“Saying what?” Jiang Li questioned. “Didn’t you deliberately keep this from me? Just pretend I still don’t know about it, so what’s there to say about?”

Tong Yi: “…”

‘She’s definitely mad!’

“Look, I didn’t mean to hide it from you,” he quickly explained. “It’s just that Lin Zhao didn’t want Wen Wan to worry, so he asked me not to tell you. If you knew, then Wen Wan would know, too.”

Jiang Li chuckled, “Really? But Lin Zhao just texted Wen Wan, saying it was you who stopped him from telling her.”

“That’s impossible! How could I do something like that? You believe me, don’t you, Jiang Xiao Li?” Tong Yi rattled off, making it clear he was flustered.

Jiang Li didn’t know why he was panicking, but she couldn’t resist teasing him. She sighed dramatically. “Well, I want to believe you, but… never mind. I’m heading to evening study now. Bye.”

With that, she hung up the phone.

Tong Yi stared at the disconnected line for ten seconds before heading straight to Lin Zhao’s dorm.

“Did you tell Wen Wan that I stopped you from telling her about you-know-what because I wanted to keep it from Jiang Xiao Li?”

Lin Zhao nodded. “Yeah. You told me to figure out my own way to appease Wanwan, so this is what I came up with. It worked great—Wanwan said she’s bringing me snacks tomorrow.”

Tong Yi looked incredulous. “And you didn’t consider that Jiang Xiao Li might get mad at me because of this?”

Lin Zhao seemed even more surprised. “Didn’t you say Jiang Li probably wouldn’t get mad?”

Tong Yi’s expression turned blank. “You also said Jiang Xiao Li and Wen Wan are so close that if something angers Wen Wan, it’s likely to anger Jiang Xiao Li, too.”

Lin Zhao nodded thoughtfully. “True, but I assumed you knew Jiang Xiao Li better than I do.”

Tong Yi: “…”

He had just realized that Lin Zhao was actually a green tea man!
