ATCF Ch 6 Part 1 – I Was Just Kidding (I)

After ending the exchange with Tong Yi in a happy mood, Jiang Li took out a book of question banks and began to solve a page. For her, the top priority now was to prepare for the high school entrance examination. Her maternal uncle might refuse to recognize her, but she must enter the best high school at any cost.

Tong Yi put a baseball cap on his head and continued to sleep on the table. When he woke up, he realized that the person next to him was still doing the questions, so he couldn’t help but take a closer look.

Jiang Li, who was concentrating on a math question, suddenly saw a shadow fall on her desk. She looked up subconsciously, only to find that Tong Yi was looking at the question she was doing with a wide grin on his face.

Jiang Li pushed the book to him, “Can you solve it?”

Tong Yi shrugged, “Do you have a bad memory? I am at the bottom of our grade, remember?”

Jiang Li took the book back with a blank face, ready to continue solving on her own.

Tong Yi, who had just woken up, was very energetic and pretty much in the mood to chat: “Have you enrolled in academic competitions before?”

Jiang Li frowned, “You mean that this question’s difficulty is on the level of competition?”

Tong Yi was speechless: “You are asking me? How can a flunker like me know?”

Jiang Li decisively skipped that question and started to read the next one. Seeing that she gave up so easily, Tong Yi couldn’t help but wonder, “Why don’t you try a bit longer?”

Jiang Li shook her head, “My main task now is to prepare for the high school entrance examination.”

If she wanted to enter the best medical school, she must first be admitted to the best class in the best high school. Although doing competition-level questions could expand her thinking, the difficulty was far beyond the requirements of the high school entrance examination, so there was no need to spend too much time on them. After she passed the entrance examination and was admitted to high school, she could then consider participating in academic competitions.

Tong Yi said slowly: “You can also win prize money by participating in the competition! Not only that, the school will also pay you bonus money. I heard the sum is quite a lot.”

After a moment of silence, Jiang Li asked: “Then how much bonus money does the school pay to the top grader of the high school entrance examination every year?”

Tong Yi: …

To become the top grader of the high school entrance examination meant that the student won against all other schools in the area, so it was a given that the bonus money would not be small. However, to rank first against thousands of other students, a bit of luck was indispensable. Even students with excellent grades wouldn’t dare to boast so much.

“You really don’t want to participate in a competition?”

Jiang Li pondered for a while and said truthfully, “I will think about it again in high school!”

Then she buried her head in the book again and continued solving the questions.

Seeing Jiang Li’s concentration, Tong Yi’s eyes wandered, and his gaze involuntarily fell on the cover of the Medical Weekly on the desk. In fact, not only their eyes and nose were similar, but their overall facial features actually quite resembled each other. On top of that, the way Jiang Li refused to be influenced by others after making a decision was really similar to that person.

Was he thinking too much?

Time always seemed to fly so fast when you were in full concentration. When the bell rang at the end of the evening self-study session, Jiang Li finally stopped doing questions to pack up and prepare to return to the dormitory.

What surprised her was that Jiang Zhou was waiting for her outside the building, asking her to go to the grove at the back of the school for a talk.

Jiang Li hesitated for a few seconds, but finally followed Jiang Zhou to the grove. She looked at the arrogant young man and said directly, “You can organize your words first, but say everything you want to say all at once. In the future, never contact me again unless it is a major matter.”

A sneer appeared on Jiang Zhou’s face, “Weren’t you so proud when you threatened Ruoruo today?”

Before Jiang Li could answer, Jiang Zhou quickly spoke again: “I came to you today just to warn you. Don’t try to fight for things that don’t belong to you. If you know what’s best for you, then you should…”

Jiang Li interrupted him, “If you know what’s best for you, then you shouldn’t come to me, let alone anger me.”

Jiang Zhou was furious, “What are you going to do?”

“For the time being, nothing.” Jiang Li said calmly, “But have you ever thought about why I agree to follow your parents’ plan?”

Jiang Zhou sneered. What else could it be for? It was no more than pretending to retreat in order to gain the upper hand, trying to win his parents’ sympathy. His mother was kind-hearted and might be deceived by Jiang Li’s little trick, but he would not.

“I agree to your request just because I don’t like to be disturbed.” Jiang Li chuckled, “but you don’t seem to understand this.”

Jiang Zhou was irritated: “Enough with your fakery. Do you think I will believe you?”

Jiang Li’s eyes narrowed slightly, “I had expected trouble when I decided to go to this school, but if you are actively causing trouble for me, then I will stop cooperating with your parents’ narrative.”

Jiang Li suddenly showed a tough attitude, which made Jiang Zhou hesitate. He cared about Ruoruo, which made him guard against Jiang Li. Before, he always thought that Jiang Li was pretending, and he was annoyed to watch her acting poorly everywhere. But…in case it was true? Jiang Li had nothing, so she didn’t need to worry about her loss. In case she really exposed the truth, how would Ruoruo fare in the future?

Jiang Zhou decided to take a step back, “You mean, as long as I don’t take the initiative to bring you trouble, you will keep this matter secret?”

Jiang Li shook her head, “I can’t guarantee anything. But one thing is for sure: if you bother me again or dare to cause me unnecessary troubles, the secret you desperately want to protect will soon be no longer a secret.”

Jiang Zhou’s eyes widened in anger, “You…”

  1. Can we skip to the part where she has no interactions with this dim wit brother and family?! So annoying.
