ATCF Ch 69 Part 2 – Pear Flavored Lollipops (II)

Before Jiang Li could respond, Feng Qi suddenly emerged from the crowd. He looked at the reporter and asked, “Does it matter to you whether she has the confidence to be this year’s top scorer? Why does she have to tell you?”

After Feng Qi appeared, the popularity of the live stream surged as newcomers, mostly there to admire the academic big shot, joined in. Four years ago, Feng Qi had won the Lasker Medical Prize, and just last December, he stood once again on the Nobel Prize podium. Although the reporter didn’t recognize Feng Qi immediately, he was completely taken aback by his imposing presence and took several seconds before asking, “Excuse me, are you…?”

Feng Qi, with narrowed eyes, replied, “Feng Qi, Xiao Lizi’s uncle, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine. Anything else you want to ask?”

“…” The reporter was speechless. Originally planning only to interview a potential top candidate for this year’s college entrance exams, unforeseen circumstances had inadvertently led them to encounter a big shot coming to pick up his niece!

The reporter’s eyes gleamed with excitement, but before he could formulate his questions, Feng Qi pulled Jiang Li away, not giving him a chance to speak. Even so, the live stream remained highly active, and the discussion shifted from whether Jiang Li could become the top scorer in science subject to Feng Qi’s impressive presence.

Once they got back into the car, Old Master Feng glanced at his youngest son and commented, “At least you’re somewhat useful at critical moments.”

Hearing this, Feng Bai couldn’t help but gloat secretly. He noticed that ever since Xiao Jiang Li was brought back home, Third Uncle’s status had steadily plummeted, and now he had even joined them to become one of Grandpa’s sarcastic targets!

Jiang Li, with her hands propping her cheeks, looked at Feng Qi with admiration, “Third Uncle, you were so cool just now. Your fans must be really excited.”

Feng Qi lowered his eyes and looked at her, “I actually have fans?”

Jiang Li immediately nodded, “Of course. You have not only fans for your looks but also lots and lots of academic fans, including many older professors.”

Feng Qi’s eyes twinkled with amusement, “Isn’t it just a group of dedicated people who love learning and striving towards the same goal?”

Jiang Li covered her face with her hands, “Uncle, can you not imitate how I talk?”

Feng Qi nodded, “Alright, I won’t mimic you. But why did you suddenly become so patient when the reporters were pressuring you?” Seeing the reporters pressuring Xiao Lizi, he thought his niece was being bullied and immediately went over to help her without thinking.

Jiang Li lowered her hands, “I was actually planning to retaliate, but then you suddenly appeared, Uncle.”

Feng Bai immediately asked, “How were you planning to retaliate?”

Jiang Li honestly replied, “I was actually planning to interview those two reporters back. It must be great to ask them about their salaries, whether they are confident about buying a car or house before they turn thirty, and whether they can make their parents proud.”

Feng Bai gave a thumbs up, “No wonder I felt your smile was weird just now; it really wasn’t just my imagination!”

Jiang Li felt a bit regretful, “But I didn’t even get the chance to interview them when Third Uncle suddenly showed up.”

“Is it my fault?” Feng Qi looked at her.

Jiang Li immediately shook her head, “Of course not, Uncle, you are the best uncle… the best third uncle in the world.””

Although Jiang Li corrected herself in time, Professor Feng still couldn’t resist teasing her, “Hmm, the best uncle, huh? Seems like Second Uncle is the useless uncle.”

Just as he finished speaking, Old Master Feng chimed in, “You do have a good sense of self-awareness.”

Professor Tan quickly agreed, “That’s probably his only virtue, and he should definitely maintain it.”

“…” Professor Feng was forced to shut his mouth again. In other families, elders would tease the younger generation for fun, but it was different with his old man, who used the adult sons instead to make the grandkids happy. Even worse, his own wife also joined the old man’s mischief.

Professor Feng looked at Jiang Li, “Xiao Jiang Li, are having fun?”

Jiang Li hesitated for a few seconds before slowly responding, “If I say yes, will Second Uncle be upset?”

Professor Feng cheerfully replied, “I’m glad you’re having fun. Though your way of having fun seems a bit costly for your uncle.”

Jiang Li immediately reached into Feng Qi’s pocket, pulled out two pear-flavored lollipops1, and handed one to Professor Feng, “I’ll treat Second Uncle to some candy.”

Professor Feng: “…” She really does treat him like a child.

Still, Professor Feng took the lollipop, turned to Feng Qi, and joked, “Ever since Xiao Jiang Li came back, A’Qi has almost turned into a blue cat robot, always having whatever you wish for in his pocket.”

Jiang Li curiously asked, “What robot?”

Professor Feng immediately explained, “Doraemon, it’s an animated character. Your third uncle must know it.”

Feng Qi shook his head without hesitation, “I don’t know it, never watched it.”

Professor Tan added from the side, “People his age have a generation gap with us. It’s normal that we haven’t heard of the cartoons from his era.”

“…” Professor Feng silently sulked his grievance. If there was supposed to be a generation gap between him and A’Qi, he had to accept it, since there was indeed more than ten years of age gap between them. But his wife was barely three years younger than him, yet she spoke as if they were from completely different generations. Wasn’t that a bit impolite?

Professor Feng felt quite offended, looking at Professor Tan with a look of grievance.

Professor Tan swiftly noticed Professor Feng sulking and chuckled as she removed the lollipop from his mouth, took a bite, and then put it back in.

Professor Feng’s face turned red instantly, unable to maintain his mournful gaze. Taking a discreet look around, he checked if anyone had caught his wife flirting and felt relieved when discovered that no one had. Perhaps it was his imagination, but he felt the lollipop had suddenly become sweeter.

The family was enjoying quality time together, and no one asked Jiang Li how she had performed on her exams. Although they all believed she wouldn’t have underperformed, they decided they wouldn’t ask unless she brought it up herself.

After the exam, Tong Yi hurried to the storage desk outside the examination room to retrieve his phone. Once he had it, he quickly turned it on and called Jiang Xiao Li to ask about her exam performance.

When she didn’t pick up his calls, Tong Yi guessed she probably had her phone on silent, so he sent several messages on QQ, teasingly asking if she would finally call him ‘big brother’ if his scores were higher than hers. Unfortunately, his messages were also left unanswered.

Bored, Tong Yi opened Weibo to check out the trending topics of the day, and that’s when he saw Feng Qi’s name on the homepage. At first, he thought it was about an award Third Master Feng had won and was not very interested, but then he saw the headline mentioning ‘…picking up…’ and immediately clicked on it.

After clicking on the trending topic, Tong Yi discovered that it was news about the young Nobel laureate Feng Qi picking up his niece from the exam center. Seeing that there was a video under the news, he clicked on it curiously and watched the partially conducted interview, his brows furrowing slightly when he saw Jiang Xiao Li evading the reporters’ questions. Could it be that she had messed up her exams?

Then, the messages he had sent just now… would certainly upset her, would it?

Tong Yi immediately exited the trending topics, trying to retract the messages he had just sent, but it was already too late. After thinking for a few seconds, he began sending Jiang Li a barrage of the same emoji, hundreds of them.

With so many emojis flooding her messages, Jiang Xiao Li probably wouldn’t scroll up, right? She might think he’s crazy, though!

Half an hour later, Tong Yi received a reply from Jiang Li.

[?]

[You suddenly sent so many emojis, I thought you made a wrong transfer and were trying to cover it up with emojis.]

[Is that all?]

[Big nephew, you’re not funny.]

Tong Yi: “…”

As expected of Jiang Moneygrubber Li, able to connect anything and everything to money. If it were just a transfer error, would he really use so many emojis to cover it up?

Fortunately, there was nothing unusual about Jiang Xiao Li’s reaction. This probably meant she performed well in her exams! Otherwise, she definitely wouldn’t have the mood to scroll past hundreds of emojis to find that non-existent transfer.

Tong Yi’s heart finally settled.
