Because Feng Qi gifted her a car, Jiang Li wanted to get her driver’s license before she started college. She originally planned to take a driving course, but when her grandfather learned of this, he arranged a private instructor for her, saying it would allow her to schedule lessons around her own time.
Jiang Li naturally wouldn’t refuse her grandfather’s kind intention and started making time for her driving lessons. She also informed Tong Yi about this, who immediately declared to get a license too, saying it would make traveling easier.
Jiang Li was curious, “Haven’t you gotten your license before?”
“I did in the US, but now that I’m back in China, I can’t use it here and need to retake the test,” Tong Yi’s response was nonchalant.
“Can’t you just convert your US license instead of retaking the test?”
“It’s possible, but I didn’t bring my license back, so I can’t apply for a conversion. Besides, there are many differences in traffic laws between here and abroad. I might as well learn them properly and retake the test,” he explained.
Jiang Li knew nothing about this, so she accepted Tong Yi’s explanation at face value and suggested, “If you’re really going to learn to drive, you don’t need to find another instructor. Just come and learn with me. It’s the same for the instructor to teach one or two people. I can just pay him a little extra.”
“That’s great. Our Jiang Xiao Li is getting more and more generous! Let’s do it together, then. It won’t be boring with more people,” Tong Yi readily accepted her offer.
After ending the call, Jiang Li wasted no time asking the instructor if he could teach another person, offering to pay extra. The instructor politely declined, stating the fee her grandfather had paid was very generous—enough to cover ten students, even.
Hearing this, Jiang Li didn’t insist further.
On the first day of the driving lesson, Jiang Li realized there was indeed no need to pay the instructor extra, as Tong Yi wasn’t really there to learn. Instead, he was proficient enough to act as a secondary instructor, effectively lightening the instructor’s load.
After two hours of practice, Jiang Li and Tong Yi were taking a break and having some water when her phone suddenly rang. She took it out and saw a call from Qin Zheng.
“Heh!” Tong Yi snorted, “Looks like our junior high classmate has a lot of free time.”
“He’s just a junior high classmate to you, but he’s always been a classmate to me,” Jiang Li responded as she answered the call, which came as a surprise since she and Qin Zheng hadn’t been in contact since he congratulated her on her college entrance exam results.
As soon as she answered, Qin Zheng’s voice came through, “Jiang Li, have you had a medical check-up recently?”
Jiang Li, slightly startled, instinctively pressed on the area where she had been injected. Realizing it no longer hurt, she replied, “I had a check-up a few days ago. What’s up?”
After a few seconds of silence, Qin Zheng revealed, “Jiang Zhou bribed the doctor who conducted your medical check-up to take your blood sample for compatibility testing with Jiang Ruo.”
Jiang Li frowned, “Compatibility testing? Are you talking about kidney compatibility?” According to the plot in the novel, Jiang Ruo’s health issues weren’t supposed to arise until her first year of college!
From the diagnosis to the successful kidney match between Jiang Ruo and ‘Jiang Li,’ it took a mere short week. Afterward, the Jiang family took turns persuading ‘Jiang Li’ to donate one of her kidneys to Jiang Ruo. However, the night before the surgery, ‘Jiang Li’ was fatally hit by a car driven by Bai Guolin, allowing Jiang Ruo to receive both of her kidneys as a matter of fact.
After Jiang Li transmigrated, she also considered that Jiang Ruo might target her kidneys, but since it wasn’t the right time yet, she couldn’t tell this matter to her family in advance. This was also partly why she started learning self-defense; although martial arts couldn’t solve everything, they could be her savior in critical moments.
In recent years, Jiang Li no longer paid attention to Jiang Ruo’s life and was unaware of her current situation. She only learned about Jiang Ruo’s livestream activities from Shen Mian.
Surprisingly, Jiang Ruo’s illness occurred earlier compared with the plot’s timeline. However, after some thought, Jiang Li didn’t find it strange. In the novel, Jiang Ruo always had an easy, smooth life, never needing to exert herself for anything. Many times, she didn’t have to fight for anything herself; people around her would simply hand things to her.
Initially, when the ‘Jiang Li’ was found by the Jiang family, Jiang Ruo felt unsettled for a while. But once she realized ‘Jiang Li’ posed no threat, she returned to her confident and sunny self, occasionally standing up when she saw ‘Jiang Li’ being bullied, further emphasizing her kindhearted persona. Later, when ‘Jiang Li’ turned against her, Jiang Ruo didn’t even need to act herself; her loyal followers and fans would take it upon themselves to deal with ‘Jiang Li.’
Given these conditions, it was quite normal for her chronic illness to only manifest later.
But after Jiang Li came to this world and replaced the original ‘Jiang Li,’ Jiang Ruo had constantly been living in fear. Once they started attending the same school, she first worried about her reputation if her identity was exposed, and after it was indeed revealed, she had to consider how to turn the situation around.
Later, Feng Qi attacked Jiang Huai’s company, the Jiang family’s status and financial situation plummeted, and Jiang Ruo lost her arranged marriage with the Qin family. Without strong backing, it wasn’t easy for her to survive in the entertainment industry. To maintain her previous lifestyle, she had to find ways to earn money, eventually turning to livestream sales.
Over these three years, Jiang Ruo’s life was no longer smooth sailing. With all the hard work and pressure, it was normal for her illness to manifest earlier.
Meanwhile, Jiang Zhou remained the sister-complex depicted in the novel, always wholeheartedly concerned about his sister who wasn’t related by blood. He was sure that Jiang Li would never agree to perform a compatibility test with Jiang Ruo, so he secretly bribed the doctor performing the medical exam for the Feng family. Now, with a successful compatibility report, his next step would likely be to scheme for her kidneys, regardless of the method.
Back to the phone call. Qin Zheng wasn’t surprised when he heard Jiang Li mention ‘kidney compatibility,’ assuming that she had known about Jiang Ruo’s kidney issues. After all, Jiang Ruo had taken photos of her medical records and posted them online; anyone paying even slight attention could discover this.
“Yes, it’s about kidney compatibility. I’m calling just to warn you to be wary of Jiang Zhou. He’s always cared deeply for Jiang Ruo, and now that it’s confirmed your kidneys are compatible with hers, he will probably stop at nothing to secure them,” Qin Zheng spoke slowly. Over the past three years, he had come to view Jiang Li as a friend. Knowing Jiang Zhou’s intentions to target her kidneys, he couldn’t just stand by.
As for Jiang Ruo, if she was willing to accept the money he offered, she wouldn’t need to worry about medical expenses and could undergo dialysis while waiting for a transplant. The odds for kidney disease patients with a rare blood type to receive a transplant are indeed low, but not nonexistent, and most importantly, even if she couldn’t find a transplant, it didn’t give her the right to coerce Jiang Li into donating a kidney.

I’m glad that Qin Zheng finally let go of Jiang Ruo.
Thank you qin zheng. You did not let our expectations down. He’s truly male lead material 🤭
I hope he finds real love one day, he’s showing what a good person he was. And clearly, Og!Jiang Li’s accident was a scheme set up by that scum brother and that loser who called himself being in love with Jiang Ruo.
