Back in Minjiang, Feng Yun was left in a state of distress, unable to visit Jiang Ruo in the hospital because Jiang Zhou would not disclose the location. She tried to reach Jiang Zhou again several times, but he refused to answer her calls and to make matters worse, Jiang Ruo’s phone was also turned off, which only increased her panic.
Completely feeling at a loss, she started calling Jiang Huai, but he too did not answer her calls. Unable to make a decision on her own, she decided to go to the company to find him.
As Jiang Huai’s wife, Feng Yun was well known by his staff, allowing her easy access to the CEO’s office. But upon opening the door, she was stunned by the scene before her and could hardly believe her eyes.
She simply couldn’t believe what she was currently witnessing.
Inside the office, Jiang Huai was lounging on a large recliner, and a woman in a white shirt sat sideways on the edge, skillfully giving him a massage. Despite the dim lighting, Feng Yun immediately spotted the woman’s partially unbuttoned shirt, and she also noticed her husband’s relaxed expression and the hand resting on the woman’s thigh.
Trembling, Feng Yun dropped her bag with a thud, attracting the attention of the two people in the office. The moment he saw Feng Yun, Jiang Huai quickly rose to his feet, his face showing tension, though he tried to appear nonchalant, “Why did you come here all of a sudden?”
It was only at that moment that Feng Yun realized her husband’s usually crisp shirt was slightly wrinkled and half of the buttons were undone. After a long silence, she finally managed to speak, “Are you blaming me for disturbing your moment?”
Jiang Huai hurriedly buttoned up his shirt, then turned around and sharply told the woman off, “Why are you still here? Get out now, or do you want to stay for a promotion?!”
The woman, clearly feeling humiliated, fixed her disheveled hair and slowly moved toward the door. Feng Yun then recognized her face; a young woman, probably just over twenty. Such a youthful age! She had been that age too when she first met Jiang Huai. Back then, she was the beloved only daughter of the Feng family, doted on by her father and elder brothers, getting whatever she wanted.
Her younger brother, although much younger than her, never behaved naughtily like other boys. Once, when she struggled with solving a Rubik’s Cube, he disdainfully fixed it for her and muttered, “You’re really hopeless.”
She was adored not just by her family, but also by everyone else. In any social setting, she was always the center of attention, with other girls merely fading into the background. Yet, Feng Yun considered her life to be monotonous and boring until she crossed paths with Jiang Huai, which changed her world.
One night, she and her roommate were passing through an alley near their school when they were robbed by two men. The muggers not only took their money and pagers but also tried to molest them. Just when they were despaired, Jiang Huai appeared like a hero. He bravely fought the robbers, suffering cuts to his arm and abdomen, but managed to scare them off.
Feng Yun took Jiang Huai to the hospital and cared for him day and night, and they gradually grew closer. She had many suitors, yet none of them were like Jiang Huai. Although Jiang Huai had a strong, dominant character and would not fawn at her, he was occasionally very gentle, which enamored her thoroughly. Even his casual actions were always charming, completely different from any other man she had met.
Feng Yun knew she had fallen deeply in love. Later, her father investigated Jiang Huai and claimed that he had several relationships before, always with wealthy women who showered him with lavish gifts and money. But Feng Yun refused to believe him. Jiang Huai had never spent her money—on the contrary, he would save his meager income, sometimes skipping meals, just to buy her small gifts.
Each of his gifts, while not expensive, was meticulously chosen, but he stubbornly claimed they were mere casual purchases, telling her not to dwell on them.
How could such a man be the gigolo her father described?
And so, it didn’t take long for her to decide to elope with Jiang Huai. They only dared to return after their son A’Zhou was born, but her family still disapproved of Jiang Huai, who was now her husband. Even though he was more capable than many of her peers, her father maintained his belief that Jiang Huai was unprincipled and duplicitous, and would eventually doom to fail.
Later, she had another falling out with her family for Jiang Huai. Her relationship with her father and brothers worsened to the point of breaking, and both sides hadn’t contacted each other for many years.
Feng Yun had always felt her choice was right. She and Jiang Huai truly loved each other, and they hadn’t hurt anyone—she had merely chosen love over her family. Even if their love was neither understood nor blessed, she was determined to persist and grow old together with this man.
It was only in recent years, as Jiang Huai’s temperament began to change, that she started to doubt her husband. She occasionally felt confused, wondering if Jiang Huai might truly be different from what she had imagined. Yet, even so, she had never thought of leaving him, as it was her choice to stay.
However, at this moment, Feng Yun felt as if her beliefs had completely collapsed. She finally remembered her father’s words from a long time ago: “The Jiang Huai you see is not the real him; he’s merely disguised himself as someone you would like to entrap you.”
She had asked her father for proof, yet he merely shook his head: “Unless the Feng family completely falls and he leaves you on his own, even if I show you proof, you will not believe it.”
Back then, she thought her father disapproved of Jiang Huai because his family was poor, so she chose him without a second thought. But now, Feng Yun felt that her years of perseverance were just a joke.
The woman in the white shirt obviously noticed the expression on Feng Yun’s face and knew how vulnerable this so-called Madam Jiang was. As she passed by Feng Yun, she turned her back to Jiang Huai, flashed a provocative smile at Feng Yun, slowly reached to button her blouse, and licked her lips.
Feng Yun felt utterly disgusted. Her blood seemed to rush to her brain in an instant. Without thinking, she raised her hand and slapped the woman.
The woman’s cheek swelled up quickly. She turned to Jiang Huai, tears welling up, and sobbed, “Mr. Jiang, she…”
Jiang Huai looked at the woman coldly and said just one word: “Leave.”
The woman looked incredulous, then stomped her foot and left Jiang Huai’s office.
Jiang Huai approached Feng Yun, his voice gentle, “Yunyun, let me explain…”
Feng Yun shook her head firmly, “No need for explanations, you make me feel sick.”
With that, Feng Yun turned around and left without looking back. Jiang Huai watched her go, pulling at his collar in irritation. Over the years, he had not betrayed Feng Yun, but the intern’s eyes resembled Ruoruo’s biological mother so much that he had been distracted lately.
But he hadn’t even done anything yet when Feng Yun caught him red-handed, leaving him with no way to explain.
Jiang Huai punched the desk, deciding not to go after Feng Yun for the time being to give her some time to cool down. Once she calmed a bit, he could always win her back later.
…
After leaving the company, Feng Yun returned home alone. On her way, she couldn’t help but make excuses for Jiang Huai, thinking that maybe he acted foolishly due to being under a lot of stress or perhaps because he was drunk.
However, Jiang Huai did not follow her, nor did he call or text, which completely disheartened her.
Once home, Feng Yun promptly moved into the guest bedroom, as the sight of the objects in the master bedroom she shared with Jiang Huai made her feel nauseous. For the next two days, she barely ate anything, and it was in this haggard situation that Jiang Zhou found her when he finally returned home.
For a moment, Jiang Zhou felt a twinge of guilt, but he quickly suppressed it and put on a pained expression. “Mom, Ruoruo’s condition has stabilized for now, but the specialists said her situation is very complicated and could deteriorate at any moment. Only a kidney transplant can improve her current condition.”
Feng Yun looked up at Jiang Zhou. Seeing that Jiang Ruo was not with him, she said, “I cannot persuade Xiao Li to donate her kidney, so forget about it.”
The actions she had taken years ago had already deeply hurt her father, and it would hurt him even more if she were to ask Xiao Li to donate a kidney to Ruoruo. She had been unfilial once; she couldn’t do it a second time.
Moreover, Xiao Li didn’t owe anyone in the Jiang family anything—no one had the right to ask her to donate her kidney.
After expressing her refusal, Feng Yun turned away and headed to the garden. She had been cooped up at home for too long and just wanted to get some fresh air to prevent feeling stifled. While she was saddened by Ruoruo’s illness, there was nothing she could do but try her best to treat her. Beyond that, she was helpless.
There was no point in discussing Ruoruo’s situation with Jiang Huai anymore. Ruoruo wasn’t their biological daughter, and in Jiang Huai’s eyes, she was perhaps just a tool for marriage alliances. Now that Ruoruo was ill and unable to be used for alliances, she had no value to Jiang Huai.
Otherwise, why would Jiang Huai be fooling around with other women while Ruoruo was seriously ill?!
Feng Yun thought she had figured things out clearly, but that night, she received a call from the hospital, informing her that her son had been found unconscious after taking a large dose of sleeping pills and was currently undergoing emergency treatment.
