ATCF Ch 82 Part 1 – Get Lost! (I)

When Feng Yun was informed about Jiang Zhou’s attempted suicide, she initially doubted the news, because she believed that with her son’s personality, it was impossible for him to have thoughts of suicide.

On her way to the hospital, Feng Yun’s mind was a mess, but she gradually gathered her thoughts. Ever since Ruoruo became ill, A’Zhou’s behavior had indeed been very unusual. At first, he simply neglected his classes to stay home and accompany Ruoruo, and then, during the summer vacation, he had been inseparably by her side.

She should have realized sooner. A’Zhou’s affection for Ruoruo had deeply rooted long ago; if Ruoruo was gone, A’Zhou would likely follow her soon after.

Her son had once asked her to persuade Xiao Li to donate a kidney to Ruoruo, a request she had refused. Afterward, he had quieted down and never mentioned the matter again. But she should have known that something was off back then! Given A’Zhou’s personality and his affection for Ruoruo, he shouldn’t have given up so easily on convincing her, and yet he did.

This proved that he had other plans.

When Ruoruo’s condition worsened, A’Zhou took her to the capital city for a consultation with specialists. When she asked for the hospital’s address, he refused to tell her, and later, he stopped answering her calls.

Fortunately, Ruoruo’s condition had temporarily stabilized, though it could worsen at any time, but at least her life was momentarily spared. When A’Zhou returned home, he approached her again to request Xiao Li’s kidney, which she once again refused.

Probably from that time on, A’Zhou had the thought of dying!

If Ruoruo didn’t survive, A’Zhou might have gone too.

In her heart, Xiao Li was her biological daughter, a daughter she owed too much and felt a heavy guilt towards, so she naturally could not ask Xiao Li to donate a kidney to Ruoruo. But A’Zhou… A’Zhou was also her biological son!

In her life, she had deserted everything for the sake of one man, only to find out that she had trusted the wrong person. Now… was even her son going to leave her?

The car soon stopped in front of the hospital. Feng Yun got out and stumbled to Jiang Zhou’s hospital room, where she learned from the doctor that he had undergone a stomach-pumping procedure but had not yet regained consciousness. The doctor also informed her that A’Zhou had taken too many sleeping pills, but luckily, he received medical treatment in a timely manner. At present, his vitals had stabilized, and he should regain consciousness within 72 hours.

Jiang Ruo was standing by Jiang Zhou’s bed, her eyes were swollen from crying. Seeing Feng Yun, she barely whispered “Mom” and then fell silent, unsure of what to say.

Feng Yun knew she couldn’t blame this girl, because everything was her son’s own decision. After a long silence, Feng Yun finally regained her composure and turned to Jiang Ruo, “Before A’Zhou… before A’Zhou doing such a thing, did he say anything to you?”

Jiang Ruo immediately shook her head, her voice choked with emotion, “Brother, he… didn’t say anything. If I had known he would become so… so desperate, I would have stopped him.”

Everything had seemed so normal before. Her brother had told her that their mother was the soft-hearted type and that by pretending to have several severe episodes, their mother would surely relent and persuade Jiang Li to donate her kidney.

Her brother had said that, and she had believed it. But she had never expected that her brother would secretly overdose on sleeping pills. If she hadn’t discovered it in time and called for help, she would probably have lost her brother forever.

Feng Yun was silent for a long time before speaking in a hoarse voice, “We’ll stay here until he regains consciousness, and after he wakes up, we need to keep watching him closely, lest he had suicidal thoughts again.”

Jiang Ruo nodded repeatedly, “I will stay by Brother’s side. I… I will talk to him, I definitely won’t let him get desperate again.”

She really couldn’t understand why her brother suddenly did this. If it was because of her illness, then he shouldn’t have done it! Otherwise, what was the point of living if she was to be left alone in this world, all by herself?

At that moment, Jiang Ruo made up her mind that, should Jiang Zhou wake up, she would agree to whatever he asked.

Before Jiang Zhou woke up, Feng Yun and Jiang Ruo stayed in the hospital room, silent, as they had nothing to say to each other. Seeing that Jiang Zhou remained unconscious, Feng Yun checked her phone for any updates from Jiang Huai, only to discover a timed email that Jiang Zhou had sent her earlier.

Trembling, she opened the email and was unable to utter a word after reading it.

As she suspected, A’Zhou’s desperation was indeed due to Ruoruo’s condition. He confessed in the email that he was fearful of Ruoruo’s condition deteriorating again, but felt helpless, thus deciding to depart from this world. He apologize for being unfilial, but he truly had no choice.

The words from the email haunted Feng Yun; her vision blurred as she stared at the screen.

After a long daze, Feng Yun put her phone away and continued to sit by her son’s bedside. Now that the reason behind A’Zhou’s attempted suicide had been confirmed, she didn’t try to contact Jiang Huai anymore because she knew that his presence wouldn’t make a difference.

Because Feng Yun didn’t inform Jiang Huai, he had no idea that his son had been unconscious after overdosing on sleeping pills. When he returned home two days later, he was surprised to find the house empty. He had a prepared excuse to reconcile and explain to Feng Yun that what she saw in his office wasn’t what it seemed, but she wasn’t home, and neither were Ruoruo and A’Zhou.

It was from the servant that Jiang Huai finally learned about Jiang Zhou’s attempted suicide. Upon learning that his son was still unconscious in the hospital, he immediately rushed there.

When Jiang Huai arrived in Jiang Zhou’s hospital room, he confronted Feng Yun: “How could you not tell me something this serious happened?”

Feng Yun turned to face him, her expression cold, “If you truly cared about your children, how could you only find out now that A’Zhou is in trouble? Was there a need for me to tell you?”

Jiang Huai then realized that the warmth and concern that used to shine in his wife’s eyes were gone. She looked at him as if he were a stranger, not her husband.

Thinking about the incident in the office, Jiang Huai’s anger suddenly deflated. Thankfully, A’Zhou’s condition had stabilized and was likely to wake up soon, which allowed him to gradually calm down. He then turned to Jiang Ruo and asked, “What did A’Zhou say to you before he took the sleeping pills?”

Jiang Ruo shook her head, “Brother didn’t say anything, really. If I had known… known he would despair, I would have stopped him.”

“He suddenly attempted suicide without warning, it must be related to your illness. He really didn’t tell you anything?” Jiang Huai didn’t believe Jiang Ruo’s story and pressed on.

Following her diagnosis, Jiang Ruo had to rely on dialysis to survive, and Jiang Zhou was there with her throughout the entire ordeal. Jiang Huai was aware of the situation, but given Jiang Ruo’s current physical condition, Jiang Zhou couldn’t possibly have done anything untoward to her, so he gradually relaxed his vigilance.

Although his two children didn’t do anything that brought him shame, A’Zhou’s sudden attempted suicide had really caught him off guard; if something were to happen to his only son, he truly wouldn’t know what to do.

Facing Jiang Huai’s pressure, Jiang Ruo started sobbing again, “I…I really don’t know! If my brother dies, I won’t be able to live either!”

Jiang Huai suddenly felt dizzy yet powerless. It turned out that his son’s feeling for his daughter weren’t one-sided. Ruoruo, she… was likely to have also developed romantic feelings for A’Zhou.

Seeing Jiang Huai distressing Jiang Ruo, Feng Yun frowned, “You never care for the children, and when something happens, you come out to blame this one and that one. Do you think this is useful?”

“…”

Feng Yun’s current appearance made Jiang Huai feel very unfamiliar. Was it because of that incident in the office? Or had Feng Yun’s attitude towards him subtly changed over the past three years without him noticing? The changes weren’t obvious, so he didn’t pay much attention to them previously.

Had it not been for the accumulation of these three years, Feng Yun would have confronted him immediately upon witnessing that scene in the office, demanding an explanation, and kept making a fuss until she was placated.

But now…

Jiang Ruo clearly sensed something was off between her parents, but she dared not say a word. At present, she was unable to concern herself with anything else; all she hoped for was her brother to wake up soon.

After two days waiting for Jiang Zhou to wake up, along with her father’s questioning just now, she had begun to understand why her brother had overdosed on the sleeping pills. But she couldn’t understand why he would do such a without saying anything to her, disregarding the consequences. Had she not decided to check on him and felt something amiss, would she have lost him forever?

Jiang Ruo dared not think further; all she wanted was for her brother to wake up soon.
