After the driving lesson, as usual, the instructor drove Jiang Li home. While in the car, she received a text from Feng Qi: [Let them in to see your grandfather]
Though the text was short and lacked context, Jiang Li instantly understood what it meant: the Jiang family had finally started to take action.
When the car arrived at the Feng family’s gate, Jiang Li indeed saw three familiar faces: Jiang Huai, Jiang Zhou, and Feng Yun. Just as Feng Qi had expected, all three were being blocked by the Feng family’s security guards and couldn’t enter the mansion.
What Jiang Li didn’t know was that the Jiang family trio had already been waiting outside the gate for half a day, but the guards refused to let them in.
Jiang Zhou was losing his patience. He whispered to Feng Yun, “Mom, should we just force our way in?”
Feng Yun shook her head, “The guards hired by the Feng family are all retired military personnel; you can’t just barge in.”
Jiang Zhou was silent for a few seconds, then suggested, “But if we make a scene outside, Grandpa might hear and come out.”
Feng Yun still shook her head, “The mansion covers a large area, and your grandfather’s courtyard is at the very back. Even if you shout till your throat is sore, he won’t hear you.”
“Why don’t you use my phone to call Grandpa? Although he has blacklisted you, he hasn’t blacklisted my number, you can…”
Feng Yun interrupted him, “The moment he hears my voice, your grandpa will hang up. He won’t even give me a chance to speak.”
“…” Jiang Zhou suddenly worried that even if they could get into the mansion, his mother wouldn’t be able to persuade Grandpa.
Jiang Li had the driving instructor pull up to the guard post, then leaned out from the passenger side and smiled at one of the guards, “Uncle Wei, after I go in, please let the Jiang family in.”
The guard was clearly startled and hesitated, “But the Third Master…”
Jiang Li immediately interjected, “This is my uncle’s instruction.”
Hearing her say this, the guard no longer hesitated. Even if the third master hadn’t instructed this, given his fondness for Miss Jiang Li, he surely wouldn’t pursue the matter further.
Feng Yun saw Jiang Li and was about to approach her, but Jiang Li’s car had already slowly entered the mansion. Feeling frustrated, she then heard the guard say, “Miss Jiang Li instructed me to let you in.”
Hearing this, Feng Yun was overwhelmed with emotions and didn’t know what to say.
After Jiang Li returned home, she didn’t head straight to her grandfather’s courtyard as usual, but went first to her room in the loft. After taking a shower and changing her clothes, she leisurely ate a pear before heading to her grandfather’s courtyard.
She hadn’t even entered when she heard her grandfather’s angry shouts.
“Get lost, get lost now! I never want to see you again in my life. I never had a daughter like you!”
“If you don’t leave, I’ll have the Jiang family bankrupt within a week. Do you believe me?”
Hearing the word ‘bankrupt,’ Jiang Huai’s complexion changed instantly. Due to Feng Qi’s deliberate suppression, his life had been difficult these past few years, and his company was barely keeping afloat. Despite that, he still made some profit, albeit barely so, and his assets were still much more substantial than those of an average well-to-do family.
Jiang Huai knew that his company was still hanging on only because Feng Qi hadn’t completely crushed it yet. This showed that Old Master Feng still had some regard for his daughter Feng Yun; otherwise, Feng Qi would have completely finished them off.
He had come to the Feng family home today with his wife, clinging to a faint hope that Feng Yun might be able to persuade her father. In doing so, he felt he would have fulfilled his duty towards Ruoruo’s mother.
But now, Jiang Huai was starting to regret it. Given Old Master Feng’s current attitude, there was no hope of convincing him to allow Jiang Li to donate a kidney to Ruoruo. Moreover, thoroughly angering Old Master Feng might actually lead him to destroy the Jiang Company completely. If that were to happen, not only would they lose any chance of getting a kidney for Ruoruo, but they might even struggle to afford the cost of her subsequent dialysis and medication.
This was definitely not the outcome Jiang Huai wanted to see. He was about to suggest Feng Yun return home and reconsider their strategy, but Jiang Zhou took action first.
There was a loud thud as Jiang Zhou suddenly fell to his knees, his expression filled with pain, “Grandpa, it’s true Jiang Li is your granddaughter, but I am your grandson too. To you, Ruoruo might be just an adopted daughter of the Jiang family, but in my heart, she is my lover and my future wife. I beg you to save Ruoruo’s life!”
Jiang Zhou’s plea was full of earnest, but Jiang Huai’s temples throbbed with tension. Hearing the words ‘lover ‘ and ‘future wife,’ he almost wanted to drag this bastard son home immediately and gave him a thorough beating.
However, Jiang Huai knew he must not lose his temper, at least not now. Old Master Feng was shrewd, and if he ever got suspicious of his real reason for opposing the relationship between A’Zhou and Ruoruo, the consequences were not something he could not bear.
Instead of invoking pity, Jiang Zhou’s plea only infuriated Old Master Feng more. “Jiang Ruo and you have no blood relationship, but for the past fifteen years, you have grown together as a real brother and sister. Now you said you are falling for her? Where is your shame!”
Jiang Zhou remained resolute, “No matter what others think, I can’t give up on Ruoruo. Should she die, I’ll go after her.”
Feng Yun also knelt beside Jiang Zhou, looking at her elderly father with tears streaming down her face, “Dad, A’Zhou really sees Ruoruo as his life. Ten days ago, Ruoruo’s condition worsened, and A’Zhou tried to take his life. He overdosed on sleeping pills and was unconscious for more than two days. I almost lost him once. If my son were truly gone, I wouldn’t be able to go on living either.”
Old Master Feng furiously retorted: “If you want to die, just go and kill yourself! There is no need to announce loudly and threaten me with your lives!”
Seeing Old Master Feng’s reaction, Jiang Zhou knew he was concerned about Feng Yun, so he quickly grasped the chance: “Grandpa, if Ruoruo is gone, I really couldn’t continue to live.”
Old Master Feng flung his sleeve, “Then you should just die and stop wasting the resources of our country! Get out, all of you! Don’t you dare linger here and ruin my granddaughter’s mood with your mess!”
Knowing that Feng Yun had come because her son, Old Master Feng’s attitude toward her was not as aggressive as before. He knew his daughter was naïve to the point of stupidity, but he hadn’t expected her to be this foolish. Jiang Zhou was just like Jiang Huai, both natural-born debt collectors. If he really intended to take his life, would he allow himself to be discovered in time? He clearly was using his own life to manipulate his foolish mother!
“Dad, I beg you—…”
“You all want my kidney, you should be pleading with me. What’s the point of troubling my grandfather?”
A crisp voice suddenly echoed through the room, and everyone’s gaze shifted towards the door, where they saw Jiang Li, dressed in a casual white long dress, walking in slowly.
As soon as Feng Yun saw Jiang Li, a look of guilt crossed her face. But thinking of A’Zhou and Ruoruo, she couldn’t back down. She… she really had no choice!
Upon seeing Jiang Li, Jiang Huai immediately felt that his daughter now resembled Feng Qi even more. She had always looked like him, but now her demeanor was aligning closely with his as well. He knew this resemblance was because Jiang Li was always with Feng Qi; otherwise, it would not be possible for her to become more and more like him.
What caught Jiang Zhou’s attention, however, was how Jiang Li looked healthier than before. Her skin had become fairer, and yet her complexion was better. If… if Ruoruo could have healthy kidneys like hers, she would surely be as healthy!
Why have you suddenly come here?” Old Master Feng frowned when he saw Jiang Li, “Did someone talk nonsense to you?”
Jiang Li smiled, “Of course not, Grandpa. You make it sound like I have never come to see you before.”
Old Master Feng realized he had been confused by the Jiang family’s presence and immediately laughed, “Nonsense, our Xiao Jiang Li is always so well-behaved, sensible, and extremely filial, too. She always makes a point to see this old relic first thing when she comes home.”
Jiang Li stepped forward and held his hand, “Grandpa, you’re not old at all. How can you say I’m visiting an old relic? I’m simply performing my filial duty, alright?”
Her grandfather chuckled again, “You and your third uncle are the same, always so clever with your words. I can never win an argument with you two.”
As he watched Jiang Li and Old Master Feng interact so harmoniously, Jiang Zhou’s gaze gradually dimmed. He could tell how much his grandfather doted on Jiang Li; otherwise, her demeanor with him couldn’t be so casual.
In this situation, convincing Grandpa to allow Jiang Li to donate her kidney was likely as hard as threading a needle with a rope. However, Jiang Zhou refused to give up. Still kneeling on the floor, he looked up at Jiang Li and pleaded, “Xiao Li, I was foolish before. I did things to hurt you, but that has nothing to do with Ruoruo. Please, I beg you to save her.”
“If you want to save her, you should look for a doctor, not me. I’m of no use to you,” Jiang Li replied nonchalantly.
