After the three members of the Jiang family left, Old Master Feng looked at his youngest son with a serious expression. “What did you mean by what you said just now?”
Feng Qi smiled slightly, “Nothing much. You just wanted them gone, so I thought of a random way to get rid of them. Are you not satisfied?”
“Is that really all?” Old Master Feng didn’t believe it at all. Jiang Huai’s reaction was clearly too unusual—he seemed to be terribly afraid that his wife would believe A’Qi’s words.
If A’Qi was really just talking nonsense and Jiang Huai had nothing to hide, he would definitely have argued his innocence and might even have suggested doing a paternity test himself, rather than reacting with such guilt.
Feng Qi thought for a moment and said, “Maybe I’ve accidentally hit the mark. Regardless, we should know for sure in a couple of days.”
Although it was already a done deal, Feng Qi knew his father would immediately rush to the Jiang family’s home to confront Jiang Huai as soon as he learned the truth. If such commotion happened before Feng Yun fully grasped the reality, it would result in another conflict between the father and daughter. As the old man was getting on in years, Feng Qi was concerned he might not be able to handle the stress.
Old Master Feng became even more uneasy due to Feng Qi’s secretive behavior.
Seeing her grandfather’s worried expression, Jiang Li tried to comfort him, “Grandpa, don’t scare yourself. I think the chances that Jiang Ruo is Jiang Huai’s biological daughter are very slim.”
Old Master Feng turned to look at her, “What do you mean?”
Jiang Li explained, “Jiang Zhou had gone so far as to attempt suicide for Jiang Ruo, and today he declared so boldly that Jiang Ruo is his lover and future wife. If they really were related by blood, Jiang Huai would never allow them to be together.”
Therefore, the likelihood that Jiang Ruo and Jiang Zhou were siblings was almost non-existent.
Hearing this, Old Master Feng finally breathed a sigh of relief and nodded repeatedly, “Yes, you’re right. If Jiang Ruo really was Jiang Huai’s child, and he maliciously swapped you and her, then he would naturally know that Jiang Ruo is his biological daughter. In that case, he would absolutely prevent Jiang Zhou and Jiang Ruo from having such a relationship.”
Although he had just agreed with this reasoning, Old Master Feng still felt uneasy when he thought about Jiang Huai’s reaction earlier. He called for the housekeeper and instructed, “Go find someone to get the appraisal results between Jiang Huai and Jiang Ruo as quickly as possible. If you can’t get samples from Jiang Huai, find a way to obtain DNA samples from Jiang Zhou and Jiang Ruo. You must act fast, understand?”
The housekeeper, seeing his employer’s anxious look, quickly nodded, “Don’t worry, sir. I’ll have someone take care of it immediately and get the results as soon as possible.”
Even after the housekeeper left, Old Master Feng still looked troubled. Once the appraisal results came out, if Jiang Ruo really was Jiang Huai’s biological daughter, then his foolish daughter would be forced to wake up to the truth, like it or not.
But if that were true, then it would mean Jiang Zhou and Jiang Ruo…
Just the thought of that possibility made Old Master Feng’s skin crawl. Although he had always hoped his foolish daughter would come to her senses, if it happened in this way… that would be too cruel.
Jiang Li knew that her grandfather wouldn’t be at ease until the appraisal results were in, so no amount of persuasion from her would work. As she and Feng Qi left Old Master Feng’s courtyard, she couldn’t help but inquire, “Third Uncle, were you really just talking spontaneously earlier?”
Feng Qi lowered his gaze and looked at her, “What kind of answer are you hoping to hear?”
Jiang Li was a bit troubled, “I don’t know. If you really hit the mark by accident, then Ms. Feng certainly won’t be able to handle it.”
Feng Qi sighed and gently ruffled her hair, “Xiao Lizi, that woman just tried to force you to donate a kidney. You don’t need to worry about whether she can handle it.”
Jiang Li quickly shook her head, “I’m not worried about her. I’m just worried about Grandpa. Despite his appearance, he’s always soft-hearted on the inside. I can tell that he worries a great deal about Ms. Feng.”
If it weren’t for her grandfather, she would pretty much rejoice to see the Jiang family fall into chaos. But she was also keenly aware that her grandfather couldn’t handle such a shock.
Feng Qi placed his hands on Jiang Li’s shoulders, “Your grandfather is her biological father. No matter how many times she has disappointed him, he can’t completely wash his hands of her. However, she has failed as a mother and never fulfilled her responsibilities in raising you, so there is no need for you to concern yourself with her, regardless of her ultimate fate.“
Jiang Li took a deep breath and nodded, “You’re right, Uncle. I won’t think about it anymore. I’ll just focus on caring for Grandpa and ignore her.”
Seeing that she wasn’t dwelling on it anymore, Feng Qi removed his hands from her shoulders and smiled, “You still have a good mother, actually.”
“Huh?” Jiang Li was puzzled.
Feng Qi’s eyes twinkled with amusement, “Don’t you call me ‘Dad’? My girlfriend is my laboratory, so that technically makes her your mother.”
After a few seconds, Jiang Li burst into laughter and teased, “Uncle, were you just telling a cringy dad joke just now?”
Feng Qi raised an eyebrow, “You think it’s cringy? Looks like I need to step up some ladder.”
Jiang Li: “…”
What does that even mean?
“Doesn’t get it?” Feng Qi laughed, “That’s how dads make sure their jokes are not cringy, isn’t it? Just take it to a higher level.”
Jiang Li realized that Feng Qi was trying to cheer her up, so she nodded, “Yes, I get it.”
…
After Jiang Huai and Feng Yun reached a consensus, Jiang Huai started driving home. However, halfway there, he suddenly mentioned that something urgent had come up at the company and asked Jiang Zhou to drive Feng Yun home while he would take a taxi back to the office.
Jiang Huai expected Feng Yun to object or at least ask him a few questions, but she didn’t even say a word and remained expressionless throughout, just like a statue. Jiang Huai glanced at her several times, hesitating to speak, but seeing no reaction, he turned his attention to his son and instructed, “Take good care of your mother.”
After Jiang Huai got out of the car, Jiang Zhou drove Feng Yun home. Neither of them spoke during the ride. As soon as they arrived home, Feng Yun looked at Jiang Zhou and said softly, “Go now and find a way to get a sample from Jiang Ruo, then give me a sample of your own. I’ll contact someone to do an expedition test tonight.”
Jiang Zhou was stunned, “Didn’t you just agree with Dad…”
“I’ve agreed on many things with him, and many of them have never come to fruition. A’Zhou, I don’t want to drag this out any longer.” Feng Yun seemed to be enveloped in sadness, but her tone was exceptionally gentle.
She might have been foolish, but she wasn’t brainless. If Jiang Ruo really was Jiang Huai’s daughter, his attempt to delay getting the test done was likely just a ploy to buy time and transfer assets out of the marriage.
Feng Yun didn’t care about those material possessions—what she cared about was whether Jiang Huai had truly loved her over these years. If Jiang Huai had ever loved her, even a tiny bit, he would never have swapped their daughter and let her raise the daughter of his mistress.
Jiang Zhou’s expression changed dramatically, “M-mom, you… you still doubt Dad…” He had already noticed, with growing sensitivity, that his mother’s way of addressing Ruoruo had changed, and her tone when speaking about her had become cold.
“Don’t you also doubt it? Don’t you want to know if Jiang Ruo is truly related to you by blood?” Feng Yun tilted her head, looking gently at her son.
