Jiang Ruo accompanied Bai Guolin to the hospital to have his shoulder fixed. Once they got into the taxi, she remained silent, not wanting to say a word. Growing up with so much love, Jiang Ruo had never faced so much hostility in her life. The gazes of those strangers, filled with malice, felt as if they were trying to devour her. She didn’t know how to escape or how to react.
Bai Guolin finally realized how much trouble his impulsive actions had caused Jiang Ruo. He saw how hurt she was by the harsh words of that senior. However, if he hadn’t confronted him, there wouldn’t have been a crowd, and the situation wouldn’t have escalated. It was his momentary impulse that had made everything worse.
Ruoruo, she… she must be feeling so embarrassed now, which is why she remained silent.
After they left the hospital, Bai Guolin looked at Jiang Ruo nervously. “Ru-Ruoruo, are you angry with me?”
Although Jiang Ruo was still feeling upset, her emotions had gradually calmed down. Facing Bai Guolin’s guilt, she shook her head and said, “They target me because I’m an illegitimate child. To them, my very existence is a sin. The fact that I grew up in Jiang Li’s place makes me even more guilty. Even if you hadn’t clashed with that guy today, similar things would still happen sooner or later.”
Bai Guolin hurriedly retorted, “N-no! That’s not a sin, and nothing is your fault. You shouldn’t feel guilty because of their nonsense.”
Jiang Ruo sighed, “Let’s stop talking about this. My registration isn’t complete yet—can you help me finish it?”
Bai Guolin nodded right away. “I’ll take you back to the apartment first, then go to your campus and handle the registration. You don’t have to worry about anything.”
Jiang Ruo nodded without saying anything else. Seeing that she was still feeling down, Bai Guolin racked his brain to cheer her up.
“Ruoruo, I’ve already signed up as a volunteer at the blood donation center. They don’t need anyone right now, but they took my information and said they’d contact me if they need help,” he told her.
Jiang Ruo pursed her lips and said softly, “I’m grateful you’re doing all these things for me, but it’s really not worth it. Even if we find someone with panda blood, their kidney might not be a match for me.”
And even if the match was successful, there was little chance that the person would agree to donate a kidney. Unless that person was in desperate need of money—in that case, offering them money in private might persuade them to part with one kidney.
“As long as I think it’s worth it, that’s enough.” Bai Guolin responded firmly. “When I find someone with panda blood, I’ll find a way to arrange for a compatibility test. The process might be long, but if we wait patiently, we’ll eventually get a chance.”
Jiang Ruo was silent for a few seconds before finally nodding. “Take me back to the apartment first.”
Bai Guolin quickly nodded. “Okay.”
…
Since he couldn’t accompany Jiang Li for her registration, Tong Yi felt a bit down. After parting with the Feng family at the villa, he carried his backpack and pulled his suitcase, walking through two streets to his own campus. As soon as he reached the entrance, one of the welcoming seniors greeted him with a warm smile and enthusiastically guided him through the registration process.
The senior talked a lot, and Tong Yi found her a bit too chatty. “I looked up the registration process beforehand, so I have a pretty good idea of what to do,” he politely told her.
Hearing this, the senior finally quieted down, but her gaze lingered on Tong Yi. She had always thought the idea of ‘love at first sight’ was exaggerated, but looking at this guy who perfectly matched her aesthetic from top to bottom, she suddenly felt that love at first sight might be quite normal.
After all the procedures were completed, the senior said with a smile, “We’re not in the same major, but we’re in the same department. Let’s exchange contact information. Maybe we can hang out sometime.”
Her gaze was so direct that Tong Yi immediately realized she wanted more than just exchanging contact information. However, he still smiled and nodded. “Sure, but if you find yourself deleted by me someday, don’t be surprised.”
“Huh?” The senior was puzzled.
Tong Yi’s smile deepened, “My girlfriend is very understanding, but I still think it’s important to make her feel secure, so I generally don’t keep contact information for girls my age. Even if I add someone out of courtesy, I usually delete them after a few days.”
The senior was surprised, “You already have a girlfriend?”
Tong Yi raised an eyebrow, “Do I look like a single guy?”
The senior quickly shook her head, “No, you definitely don’t.” In this day and age, that was only natural. A guy who could make her fall in love at first sight was certainly handsome enough to make other girls feel the same way.
But she was still pleased with her good taste. Despite his good look, this guy Tong Yi seemed like the kind who would be completely devoted to his girlfriend. Unlike many other guys who, even though they have a girlfriend, wouldn’t hesitate to give their contact information to a pretty girl who asked for it.
“I see. Then I wish you and your girlfriend happiness.” The senior sighed. “Your paperworks are finished, so now you just need to go to the dormitory building to pick up your living supplies and keys. Goodbye; I won’t accompany you.”
Tong Yi politely thanked her, “Thank you, Senior.”
By the time Tong Yi settled everything in his new dorm, his three roommates had arrived. They introduced themselves and suggested going out for dinner together, but Tong Yi declined, saying he already had plans.
After leaving the dorm, Tong Yi immediately called Jiang Li. As soon as the call connected, he casually asked, “Jiang Xiao Li, has your fruit guard squad left yet?”
“What fruit guard squad?” Jiang Li asked.
“You love eating pears, and your uncle always calls you Xiao Lizi1, so what else would they be but a fruit guard squad?”
“Big Nephew, if you don’t want to get beaten up, you’d better watch your mouth.”
“How about I come over and we have dinner together?” Tong Yi suggested.
Jiang Li was surprised, “You also moved into the dorm today, didn’t you? Don’t you want to get used to the new environment?”
Tong Yi sighed, “I just got here, and I’m not quite used to it yet. That’s why I thought I’d come to see an old friend.”
Jiang Li could understand his difficulty in adjusting to the new environment, so she readily agreed, “Alright, come on over, and we’ll go out for skewers.”
“If I’m coming over, you should treat me. I’m trying to help you save some money,” Tong Yi said bluntly.
“How do you plan to save money?” Jiang Li asked. Although she wasn’t short on money anymore, if Big Nephew wanted to help her save money, she had no reason to refuse him.
“Let’s go to your cafeteria,” he nonchalantly replied. “I’ll try the food there, and then you can come over to my cafeteria another time. Our campuses are not far apart anyway.”
“Alright, I’ll wait for you.” After hanging up, Jiang Li noticed her roommate Wen Wan looking at her curiously. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Wen Wan hesitated for a moment, but eventually, her curiosity prevailed: “The person you were just talking to, is he one of the three top scorers from your province?”
Jiang Li was surprised: “How did you know?”
Wen Wan smiled shyly, “When you guys were trending on Weibo, I even shipped you and Tong Yi’s CP.”2
Wen Wan had a baby face, and her smile made her look especially sweet. Jiang Li couldn’t resist lightly flicking her forehead. “He’s my Big Nephew. Your imagination is too dangerous.”
“Huh?” Wen Wan was confused.
Jiang Li didn’t explain further and started getting ready to head to the cafeteria. Just before leaving, she turned and said, “I’m going to have dinner with my Big Nephew. Do you want to come?”
Wen Wan shook her head, “No, it’s alright. I already have plans to eat dinner with… with someone else.”
Jiang Li responded with a nod and headed downstairs, walking towards the campus gate to meet up with Tong Yi.
When two attractive people walk together, they naturally draw attention. Noticing this, Tong Yi couldn’t help but ask, “Jiang Xiao Li, did anyone ask for your contact information today?”
