GNU Extra 2 Part 4 – Previous Life (IV)

“Your Majesty is an illustrious monarch whose name will reverberate throughout the ages, but you are destined for a lonely life. Cultivation is inherently against the natural order mandated by heaven, so this humble self just wants to make some good karma to assist one’s cultivation.”

“What do you want?”

“May Your Majesty allow this humble self to calculate your noble destiny?”

“What kind of?”

“Marriage.”

Li Chengjing’s expression changed in an instant. The guards were about to draw their swords in response, but Li Chengjing raised his hand again and stopped them.

“Speak.”

“Heaven is fair. No matter how harsh a destiny it imposes on men, it always gives us a way out. Your Majesty is not completely destined to be lonely forever. You have one, and only one, line of kinship. Yet mistakes happened, and you missed it.”

Li Chengjing stared silently. Gradually, the Taoist priest felt more and more pressured by the look in his eyes and finally succumbed down, “Your Majesty’s destined empress has actually been dead. Please stay calm and listen to one’s explanation to the end. As the saying goes, heaven never puts a man to a total dead end. Just like how Yin and Yang coexist, every poison also has its own antidote. Even though Your Majesty’s destined marriage seemed to be cut off, in fact, there secretly was a turning point.”

“Take him away and put him in the dungeon for interrogation.”

“No, no. Please don’t. I really don’t know anything. I just guessed things from your physiognomy. Your Majesty, please spare my life…”

Later, the Taoist priest underwent an intense interrogation by Li Chengjing’s subordinate, but he insisted on claiming innocence and spoke no more. He extremely regretted approaching Li Chengjing. When Li Chengjing saw that no useful information could be dug from the priest, he ordered the man to be locked in a heavy-security prison.

Then one day, the secret guard suddenly came reporting that the Taoist priest had gone missing. Li Chengjing immediately dispatched people to retrieve him, but later in the day, he took a nap in the imperial study and woke up to find his location and the season had changed.

The servant next to him got off of the horse and asked, “Ninth Master, we have arrived at Yichun Marquis Manor. Shall we go in?”

Li Chengjing was visibly shaken, “Yichun Marquis Manor?”

“Yes. Old Master Cheng is seriously ill and wishes to see you one last time. A few days ago, you decided to return to the capital to visit the old man in order to put a closure on this relationship.”

“Yichun Marquis Manor, Old Master Cheng, seriously ill…” Li Chengjing muttered under his breath. His fingers subconsciously clenched as he recalled what year it was. In the 22nd year of Jianwu, the Old Master Cheng was still the Marquis Yichun, but he was seriously ill, and he was not far away from his last breath.

This year, he was nineteen. And Cheng Yujin was only fourteen.

Li Chengjing immediately dismounted and walked quickly into the manor’s gate, walking so fast that his attendants could not catch up to him.

As he passed through a winding corridor, he suddenly paused. Liu Yi finally caught up with his master. As he caught up his breath, he was puzzled upon seeing His Highness seemed to be in a stupor, “Ninth Master, what’s the matter?”

At this moment, a gust of wind blew upon the falling snow, covering one’s vision with white.

The corridor opposite was empty; there was not a single soul there.

Li Chengjing murmured in a low voice, “There should be people here.”

Liu Yi didn’t catch it and asked again, “Ninth Master, what is it?”

Instead of answering, Li Chengjing asked back, “Isn’t there a family visiting to break off an engagement today?”

“Breaking off the engagement?” Liu Yi was baffled, “It’s better to demolish ten pagodas than to destroy a marriage. With no major reason, why should anyone wants to break off their engagement?”

Li Chengjing stopped speaking. Liu Yi suddenly realized that in such a short moment, the young Crown Prince he served suddenly became unfathomable, more like a seasoned emperor with years of experience. Of course, he didn’t dare to voice his thought aloud, so he cleared his throat and reminded, “Ninth Master, the Old Master is still waiting for you.”

Hearing this, the usually calm and expressionless Crown Prince suddenly smiled. He strode forward and passed through the dim corridor with brisk steps, “Yes. She is still waiting.”

She? Liu Yi was puzzled. Wasn’t His Highness talking about the Old Master Cheng?

A few days later, in the Jinning Courtyard, a few servant girls cautiously stood around the eldest miss and spoke in a low voice, “Miss, the Jingyong Marquis Manor actually comes to break off the engagement. How can they?”

“Why not?” Fourteen-year-old Cheng Yujin was sitting in front of the dressing table. She was clearly still a young girl, but her calmness and rationality belied her tender age, “He actually has a thought for second sister… It’s good to break off sooner than later. If I ended up marrying him, wouldn’t it be too disgusting?”

Lian Qiao and Du Ruo didn’t dare to say more and quickly picked up nice words to comfort their young miss. In fact, Cheng Yujin didn’t need any consolation. She really hadn’t expected that Huo Changyuan’s proposal for marriage turned out to have mistaken her for Cheng Yumo.

Fortunately, it was discovered early, before any steps of the marriage rituals were done. In the worst-case scenario, she would have married Huo Changyuan without knowing anything, completely destroying her lifelong effort and plan.

When Cheng Yujin was still basked in happiness, a servant girl came in and reported respectfully, “Eldest Miss, the Old Master is calling you.”

“Grandfather is?” Cheng Yujin frowned. Old Master Cheng rarely cared about the younger generation and basically only saw them several times a year. Why did he suddenly call her now?

Being cautious, Cheng Yujin asked back, “Why?”

“Old Master said that Ninth Master is back and wanted you to get acquainted with your Ninth Uncle.”

This time, Cheng Yujin was completely confused. What? Getting acquainted with her uncle?

Li Chengjing was sitting in Old Master Cheng’s residence when he heard footsteps approaching.

In this life, she was indeed much younger than him, so the title Ninth Uncle was well deserved.

Li Chengjing felt a little bit of self-disgust in his heart, but his eyes were full of smiles.

Long time no see, Cheng Yujin.

Li Chengjing felt guilty for causing her to bear the infamy of failed engagement once again, but he had no regret. As for why he elected to have Huo Changyuan break off the engagement… Cheng Yujin was petty-minded and held grudges well. Once Huo Changyuan broke off the engagement, she would instantly put him on her personal blacklist, crossing off any possibility between them.

Years of being the emperor had caused Li Chengjing to be more and more black-bellied. Something like a rival in love… of course he must crush any smallest potential in the cradle, no?

The first encounter they missed, the long day and night they missed, he would make them up for Cheng Yujin, one by one.

Regardless of past and present, she was his one and only wife.

  1. Uwaaaa!!!! I love this!!! We learn it was all planned by Ninth Uncle!!!! That is why things differed from Yujin’s past life. I love this twist! Thank you so much for the excellent translation of a great novel. Your translation truly did justice to the novel.

    1. This is the 3rd lifetime though and not the second lifetime (aka beginning of this novel).
Love this novel! I’m going to be rereading again soon.

    2. No… This is a different one. Not a twist. More like, the author reincarnated the previous life Li Chengjing to give him a second chance for HE.

As for the main story, it went differently because both Yumo and Yujin reincarnated.

    3. Not quite. There are three universes. Universe A is the first one. Yumo, Yujin and eventually Changyuan move/inherit memories from Universe A and start over in Universe B, which was this novel. Universe A trundles along a bit, then Chengjin from A starts dreaming of Universe B. With the knowledge of what he missed out on, he alone moves to Universe C, which was this epilogue.

  2. Time to reread the novel from the start.

Thank you for translating and sharing this awesome story!!! 🎊🎉🥳

  3. Thank you for the translations! I really enjoyed this novel, and the great translation made it that much better!

  4. Thank you so much for translating this great chnovel! I really enjoyed until the end and loved the FL and ML a lot. They were truly memorable characters until the end. And the plot twist of the previous life! Omg! I didn’t expect it but it was a nice surprise, a little cliché, however, it certainly explained various details to fully end the story. Once again, thank you so much 💕

  5. Thank youuuu for everything. This was such a nice story. I have enjoyed reading this so much. Thank youuuuu

    1. Thank you for your wonderful translation!! What a journey we went on, with all the ups and downs 🙈 I will definitely look into the other stories, thank you for your hard work!!! ❤️💝

  7. Thank you!!!😀🥳
It was such a great story !😍

Do you plan to translate other novels from thé same author? ☺️

  8. Thank you for the hard work~

I really enjoy this, I was just hoping that there were extras of those 2 lil buns xD

  9. I think some people are getting confused. This is a third lifetime and not beginning of the second lifetime.
1st lifetime: As it happens originally. Cheng Yujin married that other guy and died. Her sister married the guy and had a miserable life. Li Chengjing was a single emperor and he dreamed of Cheng Yujin.
2nd lifetime: the whole novel. Lol. Cheng Yujin engagement was broken off because her sister also transmigrated and knew the events and able to go to the other guy and tell him what happened.
3rd lifetime: This extra story. They went back to the original timeline. None of the twins transmigrated so they don’t know what’s going on. Cheng Yujin definitely doesn’t know what’s going on. This time, Li Chengjing transmigrated and was able to stop the first events from happening.
Thank you for translating the story!!! It’s my first story where i actually read knowing that the story wasn’t finished translating yet and i usually avoid those. I’m certainly gonna be rereading it again soon.. like probably today lol.

    1. Thanks for the translations! I MTLed this in advance but it always feels different rereading a wn in English. I came back to read the rest after I saw you updated, and it reminded me how much I love this author’s writing, especially GNU.

    2. Agree. And nobody asked what happened after the emperor took a nap on his first life. A few lines earlier it was stated that the Taoist priest escaped from prison. Was he a fraud or a true immortal? And how did the emperor took a nap and suddenly was transmitted to the third universe? Did he die? Was he killed by the priest? So many questions lol

  10. pesto basilisk

I really enjoyed this story! Glad the ML of the first time line can have a new chance for a happy ending!

  11. Thank you for the countless hours you put into translating this one! It’s been a great read.

  12. Haha, in this life and the last life, he still does everything and anything to get what he wants. Thank you so much for bringing us such a wonderful novel!!

  13. Thank you for your hard work at translating the novel. It’s a total 5-⭐️ work! Tbh, I read and re-read the novel several times already. And I enjoyed each reading .. absolutely love the FL & ML. Decisive and cutthroat 😅

  15. This is a great story! I ve read this 3 times, 1st mtl ,second time followed the ongoing translation, 3rd time reread the whole thing lol. Thank you for your hardwork.

    Much love ❤️ 😍 💖

    1. Nothing more than grateful with all my heart for your excellent translation! I was so happy reading this novel, so I say thank you with all sincerity! I hope to read you soon ❤️

  19. Thank you for all your work in translating this amazing novel. It will forever be my Number 1 in this genre mainly because of Yujin and her personality!!

  20. I’d totally love to read third life novel for our leads, with our delightful black bellied emperor and a CYJ not burdened by knowledge of the past.

Once again Tysm for translating!!!! 💛

  21. I loved this story so much! It’s one of the few webnovels that are genuinely so good they should be sold in print version with such well rounded characters, and such rational and likable MC.
PS : While I love this twist being a catalyst to her rebirth, this does create a timeline paradox of what comes first the chicken or the egg. I suppose in the first time line after 5 years of rule the emperor just vanished into thin air/ collapsed ?

  22. Thanks a lot for the translation!
I’m glad I found this great novel, when it was already fully translated, but I’m also a bit sad that it’s over now :’)

I wonder though, which timeline is the canon one now, but I kinda assume that all the timelines exist simultaneously. It’s sad that the first timeline where Yujin experienced her tragedy is most likely real, but it would be even sadder, if the one with the happy ending would stop to exist after the one from the extra story started.

Anyways it was a joyous and satisfying read 🙂

  23. Chinesefanreader

Love the alternate life new ending… pervy wolf non-blood uncle carefully grooms his innocent white rabbit non-blood niece (who’s actually a ferocious hidden dragoness) into his belovd one and only empress !!!!!!!!!!

Than you so much beloved TN for your dedication to sharing this excellent story!

  24. Thank you for your hard work! It has been a while since I’ve read such a satisfying story with an extra that didn’t ruin some of the magic.

  25. Thank you so much for the translation! Without your huge effort, I’d never be able to read such an enjoyable novel. Kudos!!!

  26. Thank you for your hard work! Read this once and jumped to mtl because I was too impatient, but so happy to reread it with your wonderful translation. Thank you for sharing ❤

  27. Thank you for translating this. I enjoy reading most of this authors novel and this was such a great one. I love the leads interactions with one another. These 2 are one of a kind. I am glad to read it until the end.

  28. Thank you for the translation. I loved this story. Love, intrique, betrayal it had everything.
Every woman would envy Cheng Yujin for having a living, loyal and protective husband like Li Chengjing. Being a rogue only adds to his charm.
I almost lost it when the pregnant Cheng Yujin was treathend by the mama’s of the Empress Dowager. So bad for my heart.
I also learned a lot about the culture of old China.
Thank you sooooooo much for translating.
