Seeing that the old lady understood his hints, Ning Shaobai then stood up and looked at her husband, “Uncle Huo, this is your family matter. You can handle it as you see fit. We’ll take our leave now.”
“Xiao Bai, the Huo family is in the wrong here, but we will definitely make it right with the Ning family. Xiao Yun will always be our daughter-in-law.” The old master apologized.
“Don’t,” Ning Shaobai responded coolly, “I think my sister has made herself very clear. Uncle Huo, from now on, our families will go their separate ways, with no further involvement.”
“I don’t agree!” Huo Xuewen, with reddened eyes, grabbed Ning Shaoyun’s wrist and refused to let go. “Xiao Yun, we still have Chenchen…”
His sister couldn’t break free, so Ning Shaobai stepped forward and grabbed Huo Xuewen’s arm. “Let go of her!”
Forced to release his grip, Huo Xuewen was then grabbed by the collar and punched hard by Ning Shaobai. “Huo Xuewen, now you mention Chenchen? Ask yourself if you even deserve to!”
Huo Xuewen crashed heavily onto the coffee table.
The old lady was still in shock, while the old master frowned and said, “Xiao Bai, you can’t make decisions on this matter. I’ll apologize to your grandfather, but you should know that Xuewen has never been unfaithful to Xiao Yun…”
“But he also has never cared, does he?” Ning Shaobai tidied his slightly crumpled shirt and looked directly at Huo Pengyi. “And you are wrong. I can make this decision. My sister, Ning Shaoyun, is not someone to be mistreated. Since you didn’t care before, you have no right to interfere now.”
Huo Pengyi frowned, “Are you blaming me?”
Ning Shaobai suddenly flashed a smile. “There’s nothing to blame. From now on, the Ning family has no connection with yours.”
Huo Pengyi remarked, “Young man, that’s quite an arrogant statement. Even your father had no authority to make such a decision.”
“I’ve always been different from my father, didn’t you know?” He leaned close to Huo Pengyi’s ear and whispered, “Actually, isn’t this situation beneficial for you? From now on, you can cultivate whoever heir you want without any concerns.”
Huo Pengyi’s heart skipped a beat as he gazed into the deep, dark eyes before him. Those seemingly charming almond-shaped eyes suddenly filled him with a sense of fear. “I’m too old for this,” he murmured.
Ning Shaobai didn’t respond, instead turning and leaving. Xia Mian linked arms with Ning Shaoyun, who ignored Huo Xuewen’s pleas, and the two also walked out of the Huo household.
Zhou Qianqian, still standing at the door, fumed when she saw them coming out. “Ning Shaoyun, you’ve gone too far!”
The group ignored her rabid barking.
Xiao Feng and Chenchen both pressed their faces against the car window, eagerly waiting for Xia Mian and Ning Shaoyun. The young man whom Zhou Qianqian had earlier called Rong Shao was leaning against the car, amusing the boys. When he saw the three coming out, he flashed a grin at Xia Mian.
Seeing the man grinning like an idiot, Xia Mian finally remembered her ‘wonderful’ appearance and suddenly wanted to dig a hole to throw herself in.
Thinking of this, she shot Ning Shaobai a glare. Couldn’t he have mentioned the plan earlier?! If she had known she would meet so many people, she would have adjusted her appearance—no way would she have shown up like this! This damn Dr. Ning was definitely a stumbling block on her path to becoming a proper little angel!
Ning Shaobai, puzzled by her glare, was momentarily confused. Then, noticing her touching her cap, he realized and gave her a thumbs-up. “You look great! Awesomely effective!”
With that, he quickly opened the car door and jumped into the driver’s seat.
Xia Mian: “…” That’s the move she made every time she teased him and then ran away!
Rong Xin, who was standing nearby, was stunned for a moment, but he quickly recovered, looking at Xia Mian with amazement. “Hello, Xia Mian, I’m Rong Xin. It’s a pleasure to meet you.” After introducing himself, he burst into laughter again, leaving Xia Mian baffled.
Ning Shaobai lowered the driver’s side window and called out, “What are you laughing at? Get in the car!”
Amidst the laughter, Rong Xin managed to speak, “I can’t help it! I just keep thinking about how Xia Mian had the old lady and that surnamed Zhou completely speechless. Too… too hilarious!” He continued laughing and turned to Xia Mian, “How about you come with me when I go on business negotiations in the future? Hahaha, you’re amazing…!!”
“She has to go to school,” Ning Shaobai interjected. “Don’t go getting any wild ideas. Now hurry up and get in the car.”
Realizing what Rong Xin was actually laughing about, Xia Mian breathed a slight sigh of relief. Of course, of course—he had been holding the mobile phone the whole time, broadcasting the conversation live to Huo Xuewen and Old Master Huo. Speaking of which, Xia Mian looked at Ning Shaobai, curiously asking, “How did you manage to get them both so timingly? Didn’t you say Huo Xuewen was busy and Old Master Huo has gone into hiding?”
Rong Xin chuckled, “Huo Xuewen was dragged into the plan by Brother Bai. If he wasn’t ‘busy,’ how could those two women have had a chance to show off their awesome acting skills? As for the old man…” The young man smiled mysteriously, “There’s no one Brother Bai can’t find.”
“You should have seen the looks on the faces of the Huo father and son when they listened to the conversation,” Rong Xin laughed. “Brother Bai is too wicked—he specifically had me hold the phone.”
“I saw Old Man Huo desperately wanted to disconnect, but unfortunately for him, the phone was in my hand. He had no choice but to listen the whole way through with a sour face,” Rong Xin said with glee. “Today’s embarrassment isn’t small—I bet the old man will definitely come down hard on the old lady and that Zhou Qianqian.”
Looking at Ning Shaobai in the driver’s seat, Xia Mian couldn’t help but be amazed by Ning Shaobai’s thoroughness—as expected of the hidden boss, he was silent but deadly, decisively resolving the issue at its root.
Ning Shaoyun, only now realizing that her little brother had been paving the way for her all along, felt a sense of relief.
“Sister Yun,” Rong Xin comforted her, “Brother Bai has already sorted things out with Grandpa Ning. You don’t have to worry.”
“Xiao Bai did?” Ning Shaoyun was surprised. She had thought there would still be a tough battle to fight with the Ning family.
Ning Shaobai replied calmly, “Just focus on living your life the way you want to. If Grandpa contacts you, just let me know.”
Ning Shaoyun suddenly smiled, feeling a sense of comfort and protection from her family that she hadn’t experienced in a long time. Ever since her younger brother went abroad, her grandfather hadn’t cared much about her well-being, and she didn’t want to trouble her father, so she had been fighting alone in the Huo family. But now, she had someone she could rely on again.
Seeing his mother happy, Chenchen also brightened up. Children were very sensitive to adult emotions—the boy had long gotten used to his grandmother’s tantrums and could ignore them just like his mother did, but his father had been acting strangely today, almost on the verge of tears, which had left him feeling uneasy.”
Chenchen had kept his questions to himself for most of the ride, but as they neared home, he couldn’t hold back any longer and asked, “Mom, where’s Dad?”
